BUFMAR organizes district microplanning workshop to strengthen immunization activities in Gakenke, Rutsiro, and Ngororero

BUFMAR recently in April 2025, conducted a district-level workshop aimed at developing tailored microplans to enhance immunization efforts in Gakenke, Rutsiro, and Ngororero districts. This initiative aligns with the implementation of the Saving Lives and Livelihoods project, a continent-wide effort to improve immunization coverage. The program is funded by the Mastercard Foundation in partnership with the Africa CDC and implemented by Amref Health Africa through BUFMAR as the local partner. Collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) has been pivotal in this process.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including Directors of Health at the district level, Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) officers from hospitals, representatives of heads of health centers, and supervisors of Community Health Workers (CHWs). The discussions were grounded in recent data showing low immunization coverage, prompting the group to identify actionable strategies to close existing gaps.

Following a thorough review of the recent need’s assessment conducted across health centers in the selected districts, participants developed specific microplans. These plans include strategies such as immunization outreach campaigns, supportive supervision, and peer learning sessions. The implementation timeline extends through December 2025.

A delegation from Africa CDC attended the workshop and provided a comprehensive overview of the Saving Lives and Livelihoods initiative. They emphasized that the core objective of the program is to empower African countries to take ownership of their public health challenges by identifying and implementing locally driven solutions

The team underscored the importance of leveraging existing resources to address continental health priorities, such as disease prevention, health surveillance, access to treatment, and the promotion of health education. They reiterated that sustainable progress depends on African-led strategies and collaboration across sectors to strengthen health systems from within the continent.

During the workshop, the Director of the Vaccination Program urged hospital representatives to take ownership and commit to increasing immunization coverage within their respective catchment areas.

Mrs. GAHONGAYIRE Monique, Director General of BUFMAR, emphasized the importance of maximizing the available resources and opportunities provided by the program. She encouraged stakeholders to work toward bringing the three districts to standard immunization coverage levels while also ensuring long-term sustainability of the progress made.

Mrs. Gahongayire also reaffirmed BUFMAR’s commitment to continued support of the health sector, in close partnership with the Ministry of Health.
